Last week, in a conversation with colleagues, two were shocked when I said that many lower-income families and developing countries have totally skipped the "computer on the desk" model of connecting with the world, and gone directly to a powerful computer in their pocket instead. They were surprised, maybe even a little incredulous, to think of a cell "phone" as a small computer. These were young (30 yrs old or less) teachers, too! I'm obviously out of step w/ my colleagues, because I couldn't believe that they were surprised! Digital divide, Texas style.
